Klamath Bird Observatory advances bird and habitat conservation through science, education, and partnerships. K.B.O. focuses its efforts in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion of southern Oregon and northern California. The Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion is known for its extraordinary ecological richness due to its diverse geology, climate, habitats, and species.
Juniper/sage-steppe, a habitat in shrub-steppe vegetation communities, is of significance to birds in this bioregion. In this habitat, bird species richness and diversity are greatest in landscapes with a mix of western juniper stands, big sagebrush, and other native plants and grasses. These habitats are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation from agriculture conversion, overgrazing, development, and alteration of natural fire regimes. Regional bird conservation plans highlight the Ferruginous Hawk, Loggerhead Shrike, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Western Kingbird as focal species that indicate a healthy juniper/sage-steppe habitat with conditions that are critical to the conservation of the associated bird communities.
